Christmas, then the Birthday!

We have just returned from our Christmas outing to my husband's family. We left well, all but one came home sick - so far that's me...the one. I guess I'll count my blessings that no one has thrown up this holiday season...yet! I think think that makes this one the first in five years or so.

My youngest's 6th birthday is fast approaching on New Year's Eve. In the past, we've done her party with kids either before Christmas break or far after, but this year we're actually going to try to have the party on her real birthday! But I have made a grave error....

I thought no one would want to come to a holiday time birthday party....boy was I wrong! I invited all the girls from her class, her Daisy troop, her soccer team and a few from dance, as well as a few of her sister's friends to act as helpers. Almost everyone is coming! Now, all I can do is pray for no rain, decent temperatures and improved health for the birthday child!

A Great Toy Safety Site - Check Your Toys to See If Listed for Lead

Please head over to HealthyToys.org today and check to see if any toys you've purchased or own are included in their database. They have listings by alphabet and by brand, so you can see what chemicals are in the toys you are considering adding to your child's toy box. They list more than just lead paint, they list many other toxic ingredients you may not be aware of. Let me know what you think.

Holiday Eating Tips

A friend emailed this to me today - I'm sure it's floating around cyberspace, but it is funny....

Holiday Eating Tips

  1. 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
  2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-aholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!
  3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
  4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
  5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
  6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
  7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.
  8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
  9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
  10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

I'm Doing Only Online Christmas Shopping This Year

As I've written before, I really hate going to the malls to shop for Christmas presents. I totally avoided Black Friday by shopping exclusively online. I've never had any trouble returning items and I'm saving gas too. I've been shopping for tech bargains this year, as we are looking at getting a new computer for our online business soon. We've had our current one for over five years and I'm kind of worried about it failing unexpectedly - which has happened with a prior computer! We're like to look for the best deals and I really like techbargains.com because they do the searching for us. We've signed up for the email newsletter which will send us alerts for the items we want to buy. I liked that I can choose what deals

I'm also in need of a new digital camera and was pleased to use this service and the site to compare deals. They have a wonderful database with reviews and comparisons, so it has been really easy to choose between the models. They keep the site updated 24 hours per day, and they add new deals several times per day. I love finding coupons and they have tons of them, so check it out, save some gas and find what you need online this year!

Happy Black Friday to You...

I am happy to say I won't be out there with you mega-shoppers and your walkie-talkie carrying shop buds. I will be tucked away, snug in my little bed, with visions of comfy blankies in my head. It is simply not worth it to me to lose sleep and have slugfests with old women over the one "whatever" that Walmart decided to put on special at 5 a.m. Yes, I know, some of you live for this day, to feel like you get a chance to beat "the man" and take some of his retailing profit away, but you are deceived. You are playing into their hands....

In your sleep deprived state, you'll buy more, you'll eat more and you'll blow your credit limit faster than you can say (fill in with funny line here...I'm too full to think of a good one yet). You'll probably end up spending more than you ever planned and 6 weeks later as Christmas approaches, you'll forget what you bought (since it will be hidden in the closet) and you'll buy even more! So I won't be out feedin' the man, I'll be sleepin' in and doing internet shopping when appropriate sales are out and enjoying myself. Have fun, shoppers!

First Friday Weekend Artwalk in St. Augustine

America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida, is home to many artists and art-lovers. On Friday and Saturday, December 7th and 8th, along with the first Weekend of each month thereafter, the city comes alive with music and art exhibits. Grab a date and head out to enjoy your own First Friday Weekend Art Walk. We live very nearby, so we've had the opportunity to enjoy the St. Augustine Artwalk several times. It's really a fun way to spend a Friday evening, especially now that the weather is cooler and the holiday lights are out all over the city.

The art galleries of St. Augustine sponsor FREE, self guided monthly Artwalks, featuring the finest collection of eclectic art in North Florida. You can wander at your leisure, enjoy free appetizers and wine at a lot of the galleries, and get a little exercise. It's sometimes difficult to find parking, so it's really nice that they offer free parking and free Sightseeing Train and Trolley tours.

There's a little bit of everything available to see, painting, sculpture, pottery, photography...you'll find a treasure to take home to remember your special night out. I love the little watercolors of the historic homes and also photographs of the fort. So, maybe we'll see you there in a few weeks to enjoy the arts!

Send Your Children Letters From Santa Claus

I always enjoyed writing letters to Santa Claus each year until I was about eight years old. It was that year I found the Santa present stash stored in my parents' garage. They didn't make up some happy story when I confronted them about it. I kind of wish they had......

Christmas is about magic! My oldest is a questioner and she has her doubts, that's okay. But I won't confirm her suspicions about the reality of Santa. Because I do think Santa is real! Also, Santa's elves will be arriving today bearing notes, mayhem, and tiny gifts until Christmas. We all help make Santa real through our thoughts and actions! Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! You can help keep the Christmas magic going yourself by using Santa Letters! Your child will get a Personalized Letter from Santa I think this is really cool. You help create special memories your kids will treasure forever!

Another Christmas in Iraq - Making it Brighter!

This will be another Christmas in Iraq for the hardworking men and women of the armed forces. Recognizing that this is a real hardship for their families and to show support for them all, Gallery Collection has made a fantastic donation in conjunction with the support/aide group Soldiers Angels. They just donated a greeting card to be mailed to each soldier that wishes them Happy Holidays and Happy New year and tells them Thank You! Each serviceman or woman will also receive a blank card and envelope for them to write back home. They'll all receive these cards along with wonderful care packages sent by Soldiers Angels.

Gallery Collection is a Corporate Christmas Cards Company specializing in truly beautiful greeting cards. These days it's so easy to find cheapo cards with basic messages, but harder to find works of art to inspire those who will be recipients of your holiday joy.

You'll find some of the prettiest choices at their site, so go take a look and support them for supporting our troops

3 Fun and Unique Gifts for Anyone!

Christmas is a time to have fun and enjoy your family! It's a great time to bring smiles to their faces. It's really fun to find a few quirky items for those hard-to-buy-for family on your Christmas list. I've found three fun unique gifts that would make anyone happy! We got a chance to sample these with our family and all of them were hits! We live with my parents and our elementary aged children, so we have three generations of people with divergent tastes to please.

The first big hit was the Video Fireplace DVD. We live in Florida, where in the winter, we rarely have cold weather. It can be really hard to get the mood for the holidays without a fire. That's taken care of with this great DVD which gives you lots of options of fireplace fires to enjoy on your TV. We'll crank this baby up on the 80 degree Christmas Eve we almost always have! Can Santa come down the DVD this year? Does that even make sense?

The second fun little item is called the Smencils Gourmet Scented Pencil. They are really strongly-scented usable pencils with the smells of gourmet foods. We tried out Rootbeer flavor. The kids thought it was cool, it smelled exactly like a freshly-opened can of rootbeer. Smencils are made from recycled newspapers and bathed in cool scents that last! Even the shavings smell good. This would be a really great stocking stuffer for kids of all ages, especially people who love scents. Or teachers!

The third fun gift is called Insta Snow Fake Snow Powder. We looked at this tiny bag of white powder with some trepidation. The simple instructions say to add 10 ounces of water and get instant snow! Well, that sounded good too, since we rarely see a flake in north Florida. Here's what happened...we added water to our little packet in a bowl and instantly it exploded into a giant bowl of snow! It feels soft and cool and really looks like snow! The instructions on the website said we could actually make a snowman so we tried this by freezing it for an hour, but the kids couldn't wait that long and hauled it outside to start playing! The photo shows my little one enjoying the Insta Snow in Florida! You could use this stuff to make snow for your little fake Christmas scenes, surround your model train sets, or just play with it. It is also non-toxic, so you could, theoretically, eat some (bleh). They actually sell a size that would make 8 gallons of fake snow - I think it would be funny to dump into someones hot tub! This makes the Fake Snow Powder a great little stocking stuffer for people who can't find the real stuff!

Personalization Makes Your Child's Christmas Special

Personalized Gifts for Children make great Christmas Gifts! Kids love to see their names in print, especially on specially created toys and Christmas items. I have worked each year to create a special Christmas ornament collection for each of the children. I label each year's ornament with their names, so that when they grow up and leave the nest, they'll have starter ornaments from our family Christmases to take with them for their new families. With personalized ornaments, that makes this fun yearly quest just a little easier, since their name will already be there!

Parents Call for Recall of Mattel Hot Wheel Maniacs Car

Parents in Australia are calling for another Mattel toy to be pulled from the shelves. Hot Wheels Maniac is a car

"with a digital driver who according to the
literature, "begs, pleads and asks for more pain. Kids can over-feed, electro
shock and torture these digital drivers"."

Mothers groups are outraged there and are calling for the toys' removal due to its abhorrent messages for children and adults about torture and violence.

I did a quick search for them and found them at EToys. The description says "Meet the Maniacs, digital drivers ready for some out-of-control action. Spin 'em, flick 'em or press their buttons for hilarious reactions, cool games and crazy interactive fun. But best of all, you're calling the shots as you take these gassy goofballs on a drive to remember."

I'll bet they'd remember your children torturing them until they scream.....who designs this crap, anyway! I'm behind the Australians all the way with this one.

Santa Banned from Saying Ho Ho Ho

I laughed when I read this story. In Australia, recently hired Santas said they were told not to say "ho, ho, ho". Instead they are to say, "ha, ha, ha", because it was said that "ho" can be offensive to women. Give me a break! The Santas are appropriately outraged! Tell any "ho" that is offended by "ho, ho, ho" to go back where they came from!

Let's all get with the Christmas spirit and say "ho, ho, ho" to everyone we meet this year. And, by the way, head over to Santa's blog to keep the spirit going all this holiday season!

Recalls - Curious George, Kids Sunglasses, Cribs, Cars, Wagons and More

I'm updating this week's list of child and kid-related recalled items from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. I already profiled the Aqua Dots recall in an earlier post. Here is the list as of Friday, November 9, 2007 for this prior week. You can click on the toy name to go to the recall website for that item.

Parents and other concerned adults should take a vigilant look at your children's toys. Don't wait for a recall to remove old or damaged toys with loose or small parts. If you have older kids, please don't let smaller siblings near the toys with small and loose parts. I used to tell my older daughter every day that she had to keep the little toys away from her baby sister or I would take all of them away. She was very good about it. Know what is on the floor at all times! Be safe and careful this year! I will post news as it breaks.

Have Greener Christmas by Using LED Holiday Lights

LED Christmas lights are a great way to save electricity this Christmas holiday. They use 80 to 99% less electricity than traditional incandescent holiday lights. LED Christmas tree lights will also last over 50,000 hours versus about 2000 hours for regular lights. You can save money and extend the life of bulbs. How many of you have spent hours trying to find that one burned out bulb any way! A lot of lives are also lost around Christmas when Christmas trees and homes burn due to hot or badly wired lights. Since LED holiday lights operation at only 1 degree above ambient temperature, they don't heat up, so there's less overall fire risk.

I still have video of my then baby girl trying to grab and bite our first year Christmas tree mini-lights. Those of you with kids will appreciate that LED mini light are encased in nearly indestructible plastic bulb which can take lots of abuse, unlike the glass bulbs. So help save some money, electricity and fuel in a time when we need to change the direction our Earth is headed. Oil prices are going through the roof, so make a very easy change to be greener and try LED holiday lights this year!

Visit Uptown Saturday Night in St. Augustine, FL

Very fun and interesting arts Events in St. Augustine abound. We live only 30 minutes away and often take advantage of the diverse and eclectic arts and crafts events there. It is a beautiful and historic city to visit anytime, but Fall offers the best temperature and great holiday shopping opportunities. Nights of Lights begins in November and the sparkling lights all over the city only add to the ambiance while you enjoy these special times.

One of the best and newer arts events is Uptown Saturday Night. Enjoy free parking at Mission of Nombre de Dios and stroll along the northern shopping district. There are also great restaurants along the northern corridor of San Marco Avenue, like Raintree and Cortesses Bistro, to enjoy. But take advantage of the festivities, as each participating shop features an open house with wine and refreshments that add to the festive night time atmosphere.

During the last Saturdays in October and November the focus is on the incredible antique shopping opportunities available in the Nation’s Oldest City. On that evening, the antique district concentrated along San Marco Avenue comes to life with lively street music and endless opportunities to shop for antiques, rare books – even authentic Spanish treasure. During this monthly event, participating antique dealers provide great workshops covering a variety of antique related topics, book stores provide readings and book signings by local authors, and art galleries feature exhibit openings of some of the finest Florida artists.

A short walk away, additional antique discoveries can be made along Aviles Street – the oldest street in America. Galleries, antique stores and unique shops between Ripley’s Museum and the Mission of Nombre de Dios remain open during this special time. Meet the artists, go to book signings and enjoy live music, refreshments and other events in the party-like atmosphere.

A favorite end-of-the-month event, Uptown Saturday Night takes place from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm the last Saturday of October, the 27th and November , the 24th, as well as every last Saturday going forward. So get out and enjoy the best city and best weather to enjoy art!
